The Low Vision Department
At ChildVision, we put your child’s sight at the centre of everything we do.
- We are a vision-first service.
- Our focus is always on what your child can see, and how they use their vision in daily life.
- We support children from early years through school, working closely with families, teachers, and therapists.
The Functional Visual Assessment
- Usually the first step in our department.
- A play-based, relaxed assessment where we look at how your child uses vision.
- Very different from a hospital eye test – children often show us more here than they can in a clinic.
- Gives a truer picture of your child’s vision in everyday life.
Our Specialism: Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)
We have a strong specialism in CVI – a condition where vision is affected by how the brain processes visual information.
- The functional visual assessment for CVI is very different from assessments for other eye conditions.
- Instead of focusing only on the eyes, we look at the neurological visual processing areas – how the brain understands and interprets what is seen.
- We explore areas such as:
- Visual attention
- Visual field use
- Processing of movement and complexity
- How vision works in different environments
- Our specialized assessment helps identify the unique challenges your child may face and how to support them best.
- We use the latest research, tools, and techniques, and our therapists continually update their skills with additional training.
- This means your child will always receive the most up-to-date and effective support available.
After the Assessment
- You’ll receive a report with:
- Practical recommendations for home and school
- Advice for parents, teachers, and therapists
- Suggestions to make learning and activities more accessible
Working with Others
- We’re part of a multidisciplinary team (teachers, therapists, psychologists, and more).
- We help adapt assessments, so your child is tested in a way that’s fair and accessible.
- Our goal is to give your child the best chance to show their full potential.
Support for Parents
- In the early years, we guide parents on how to stimulate and encourage vision at home.
- If vision is limited, we introduce tactile strategies (using touch) which may be easier for your child.
- We run groups and sessions to support parents, especially those new to vision impairment.
Ongoing Support
- Creating vision plans to build visual skills over time
- Working with teachers to make schoolwork more accessible
- Offering advice to families and professionals whenever needed
Our Goal
We want the environment to suit your child’s vision, not the other way around.
When surroundings are adapted, your child can thrive, learn, and grow with confidence.
