Visual Impairment Multidisciplinary Team

This comprehensive course was originally given in a face-to-face by the specialist team at ChildVision. The course was designed to help occupational therapists, speech language therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, visiting teachers, special-needs assistants, parents and others to create a better understanding of working with children and young adults who have a visual impairment. Our team of experts will speak to you on eye anatomy, eye health, common visual impairments, assessment and treatment adaptations for both the clinic and classroom. A thorough functional visual assessment will be demonstrated and narrated during the course.

Learning Outcomes

This course will present the user with new ideas on adapting his/her daily practice and approach. It will help the user to put a
VI hat on when working with children with a visual impairment and understand when and how to refer to ChildVision.

Visual Impairment and Development

This course will provide an overview of normal development, particularly in the first year of life and how it is effected by presence of a visual impairment. Many milestones in the areas of fine motor development, gross motor development, communication, etc., are achieved in the first 12 months of life. Having a visual impairment will very likely have an effect on a child’s overall development in this time period. When we understand normal early years development, we are better positioned to assist a child with a visual impairment to reach their milestones with greater likelihood. Early developmental screening and intervention is vital to the overall well-being and care of the child with VI. Watch and pause the video as often as you like. At the conclusion of the course, you will be asked to answer a few quiz questions related to the material you have just viewed. When you achieve 80 % or greater on the quiz, you can print your certificate of completion. Visit elearning.childvision.ie often for more learning opportunities.
