Sighted Guide - FREE TRIAL COURSE
This is a free educational video from ChildVision. This video will provide an overview to a basic skill level of sighted guide that will be useful to anyone who encounters a person with a visual impairment. Our aim is to increase awareness of how a sighted person might offer assistance to a person with a VI and do so in a comfortable, non-threatening way.
This video offers a brief introduction to four assistive technology devices and features commonly used with children with a visual impairment or who are blind. In this video, you will be able to view the Connect 12 high performance magnifier by Humanware, the Braille Note Taker by Humanware, the Zoom feature available on an iPad, as well as the SMART Perkins Brailler by Perkins, as we discuss their uses and benefits. You can pause and or re-watch the video as often as you like.
Visual Impairment Multidisciplinary Team
This comprehensive course was originally given in a face-to-face by the specialist team at ChildVision. The multidisciplinary presentation was captured on video and is now available to you to complete at a time and place convenient to you. The course was designed to help occupational therapists, speech language therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, visiting teachers, special-needs assistants, parents and others to create a better understanding of working with children and young adults who have a visual impairment. Our team of experts will speak to you on eye anatomy, eye health, common visual impairments, assessment and treatment adaptations for both the clinic and classroom. A thorough functional visual assessment will be demonstrated and narrated during the course.
Visual Impairment and Development
This course will provide an overview of normal development, particularly in the first year of life and how it is effected by presence of a visual impairment. Many milestones in the areas of fine motor development, gross motor development, communication, etc., are achieved in the first 12 months of life. Having a visual impairment will very likely have an effect on a child’s overall development in this time period. When we understand normal early years development, we are better positioned to assist a child with a visual impairment to reach their milestones with greater likelihood. Early developmental screening and intervention is vital to the overall well-being and care of the child with VI. Watch and pause the video as often as you like. At the conclusion of the course, you will be asked to answer a few quiz questions related to the material you have just viewed. When you achieve 80 % or greater on the quiz, you can print your certificate of completion. Visit elearning.childvision.ie often for more learning opportunities.
